Ink Spot CE User's Manual
Set Up

What You Need

Ink Spot will run on any Windows CE 2.0 and above device. (Note: the images in this manual are taken from both the H/PC and PSPC versions of Ink Spot.)

Once you have downloaded and installed Ink Spot to your Windows CE device, you need two pieces of information to get started:

Specify a News Server

When you first run Ink Spot you will enter the Quick Setup Wizard, which allows you to quickly specify the name of your news server and your name and email address, and choose a connection method for Ink Spot to use. All of these can be changed later by choosing Quick Setup from the File menu, or through the preferences. If you want to add multiple news servers from which to download, this must be done through the preferences.

If Your News Server Requires a Password

Some news servers require the user to log in and supply a password. This is a second set of credentials, usually different from your regular username and password. Ink Spot can automatically log you in using your news server username and password. If you aren't sure whether your server requires an additional login, you can either ask your system administrator or try downloading without it. Chances are you won't need it, it's usually only required when there is secure information on the server.

To set your news server username and password, go to the Server tab in the preferences and check the "Server requires an extra login" box. Text boxes will appear in which you can enter your news server username and password.

If your server requires secure password authentication (SPA), Ink Spot also offers NTLM (NT LanMan) authentication. Note that SPA is a generic term and NTLM is a specific implementation, so this might not be the exact SPA that your server requires. If you're having trouble getting this feature to work, ask the administrator of your news sever if they support NTLM authentication.

Specify the News Groups

Because there are over 20,000 news groups on the net, Ink Spot cannot download a listing of groups to your PDA. However, sites like deja.com do have a way to quickly display the names of news groups. Deja.com will also give you an idea of the traffic in the group.

Once you know the news groups you want to read, choose the "New group" option from the Groups section of the Group menu. Enter the group name and press OK, and the group will appear in the group list.
